Arlington Homestay

Ballston

Casa de familia en Ballston, Estados Unidos

Both host parents are former EFL/ESL teachers. We have experience living overseas in Japan for over ten years and taught English at the high school, college and graduate levels, and for business people. We have our Doctorates in Education in TESOL/Applied Linguistics. We enjoy cultural exchange and traveling. We enjoy meeting people from around the world and people-to-people exchanges. Having homestay students helps to enrich our family life. When I was in secondary school, my family was frequently hosting friends and family from Japan, so I learned how to be a cultural ambassador. Our son attends the University of Virginia, so he is away for college during the school year. He is very outgoing and loves meeting new people.

We live in a townhouse community with a European villa look (painted brick with black wrought iron trim. There are forty homes with a large landscaped green area behind our home. Within a few blocks, we have bakeries, coffee shops, restaurants, parks, and a community center with playing fields and basketball hoops and a tennis court. Our family has a year round indoor pool membership. We enjoy visiting nature parks and going to the mountains. We love visiting the Shennandoah mountains and valley for year-round natural beauty. We also think Williamsburg, Virginia is an interesting historic site. Washington, DC has many impressive monuments and museums.

We typically get up early around 6 am to have breakfast. My husband and I work remotely as federal employees in the Washington, DC area. We generally have dinner around 6 or 7 pm. During the work week, we enjoy taking a walk after dinner. We also enjoy reading, watching TV, listening to music, doing email, so that we can be available to help. During the summer, we frequently go to the pool in the evening during the week and weekend to enjoy the outdoors. We also enjoy playing family games (cards, board games, etc.) and watching movies/TV. Mom also enjoys cooking and baking. Occasionally, we will plan a weekend excursion to the mountains for skiing or to a city in another state for sightseeing.

We expect the homestay student to keep her/his room neat and clean, and to do some household chores (e.g., his/her own laundry, clear dishes, etc.). We have two large, very friendly cats. We offer the homestay student a private room with a desk, dresser, closet, and a private bathroom.
